The “Inspirational ideas: Foraging pigs” article by ITAB was published in the news of EIP-AGRI Service Point. The article gives a portrait of Carl Sheard, an organic pig farmer in France. Carl talks about his outdoor fattening system and the phase one of his trial. During this time he set up fences, organised paddocks and observed the behaviour of pigs familiarising with the forage parcel. Over the course of 6 weeks the soil remained intact while pigs effectively consumed the vegetation.
The second phase of trial will start in spring 2020 and it will focus on the growth rates with regular weighing, as well as on the analysis of forage and meat quality. For more information check the full article here.
